Thawing snow can reveal a lot more than just the green, green grass of spring, but with a little community cooperation you can have your parks and streets looking fresh and clean in no time.

Ready to get started?

1. Pick a date
The first thing to do is pick a date that will maximize the number of people who can turn out for the clean up. Generally speaking, weekends are better than weekdays. You should also check to see if there are any other big community events scheduled that may involve a lot of members of your neighborhood like amateur hockey playoffs. Once you have your date, it’s time to let people know what’s planned.

2. Talk it up
Start spreading the news. Tell neighbours and neighbourhood friends and ask them to tell their friends. Send out an e-vite and, if you have the time, distribute flyers door-to-door. You can also alert your local newspaper and ask them to run a free notice in the community notifications section. Be sure to ask everyone attending to bring a supply of garbage bags and gloves.

3. Gloves…check…bags…check
Now you can start gathering supplies. This is the easy part – gloves and bags. That’s really all you need. Check with your town – they may provide bags and other necessities.

4. To the dump!
Assign one person to drive around during the clean up or to be at a designated spot to pick up full bags with the goal of taking them all to a local dumpsite once the clean up is complete. Check with your town - it may provide garbage removal for you.

5. Celebrate your clean community!
After all the hard work is done, it’s time to sit back and relax. If the group is small, invite them back for dinner. If the group is big, you can still do dinner, but potluck may be your best bet. Or, you can have everyone back for snacks and hot chocolate. If you are doing a dinner, or part of a dinner, try preparing make-ahead meals that can be prepared ahead of time or reheated when you get home. This way you can enjoy the company of your neighbours without having to start preparing the food. Add an ET TU Salad and end the meal with a fresh-from-the-oven hot apple crisp from ET TU!

Some foods are grown green, some foods achieve greenness and some foods have green thrust upon them, but the one thing they all have in common is that they make a delicious and fun way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th!

Let’s start with foods that are naturally green. Lots of fresh fruit and veggies come in hues of green. In fact, you can find everything green from apples to zucchini in the produce aisle. You can start your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with a tray of fresh veggies and dip – include cucumbers, zucchini, green peppers, beans and broccoli along with a healthy dip or guacamole. Of course, no meal is complete without a green salad like ET TU Caesar Salad Original or Light.

Kermit the frog may feel that it’s not easy being green, but for a lot of foods it’s as easy as a few drops of natural green food colouring or the addition of some puréed herbs – depending on the food you’re turning green. You do have to start with a fairly light coloured food in order to fully change it to green, but there’s no shortage of foods to choose from including cream sauces, mashed potatoes, cream cheese, butter, sour cream, ice cream, cream based soups, the list goes on and on.

When you don’t want to alter the taste of a food, like cookies, cakes, puddings or milk, a drop of natural green food colouring is your best option. For foods that can take an extra flavour hit, like mashed potatoes, cream soups or pasta sauces, then pureed herbs are a nice addition.

Everyone likes a guessing game, and here’s a new take on 20 questions where you give out the clues and see how long it takes for your guests to guess what the green mystery is. Natural green food colouring

Natural green food colouring can be purchased online and in some health food stores. If you wish to make your own, you can try the following recipe:

Wash spinach or avocado thoroughly, and puree it, until smooth, with a blender.

In a medium pan, add four cups of water, and pour in about ½ cup of the puree. Boil this mixture, and then let it simmer for a couple of hours, on low.

Strain the pulp from the liquid, and pour the liquid into a container to cool. You may add about ¼ tsp of baking powder in this liquid to create a deeper green colour.

Refrigerate until you need to use it.
